As Canadians face the New Year with optimism, our Conservative Government is continuing to stay the course in delivering Canada’s Economic Action Plan to help our economy recover from the global economic recession.

Lately, we have seen encouraging signs that our Plan is working for the economy while helping to create and maintain jobs. Canada’s GDP grew for the second month in October, and November netted 80,000 new jobs for Canadians. Though our economy is beginning to see positive signs of growth, we are not out of the woods yet.

Our Government is preparing to enter into the second phase of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. This phase includes more help for families and businesses as we all begin to pull through from the challenges of the recession.

Popular tax measures from previous years continue in 2010, such as the Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA). Families will be able to use the flexible tax-free savings vehicle for their lifetime savings needs. In addition, families will continue to save on home renovations and upgrades before February 1, 2010 through the Home Renovation Tax Credit.

As well, we are increasing the deductible portion of meal expenses for long-haul truck drivers from 70 per cent to 75 percent. In 2011, this rate goes up by a further 5% to a maximum of 80%.

As a result of our Conservative Government’s actions, Canada is positioned to have the lowest business tax rate of all the G7 countries.

While we believe the last thing Canadians need is more taxes, Michael Ignatieff and his Liberals disagree. As Michael Ignatieff travels the country promising lavish new spending, the result such reckless policies would be higher taxes for everyone.

Our Conservative Government will remain committed to responsible economic leadership by continuing to carry out Canada’s Economic Action Plan. We will always work in the best interest of Canadians, their families and our economy.
